Cardno Technical Editor in Honolulu, Hawaii

Cardno Government Services is seeking a Technical Editor in our Honolulu, Hawaii office. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Planning, editing, proofreading, and coordinating the production of moderate to complex technical documents and presentations with accuracy, consistency, professional quality, and conformance to appropriate style guides. Technical terminology, length, scope, production methods, and client direction will establish complexity for each document.

  • Assists with formatting of documents, organizes content, writes/edits text, and provides instructions for final reproduction. Works online as required.

  • Collaborates with authors, subject matter experts, and professional staff while preparing a full range of technical documents. Works with authors to resolve editorial and/or content issues.

  • Reviews document requirements (including content and schedule) with project managers and provides guidance for successful and timely product completion.

  • Recommends and coordinates form development, graphic design, reprographics, and document processing support.

  • Edits and/or rewrites draft documents to industry and government standards while conforming to client style guides and other document-related procedures.

  • Ensures that material is structured and formatted logically and resolves inconsistencies.

  • Monitors job progress and alerts responsible supervisor when schedules appear to be in jeopardy.

  • Maintains complex electronic file management and configuration control.

  • Assists other publications staff, and works evenings and weekends, as required.

  • Provides general administrative support as required.



  • Bachelor Degree in English, Journalism, Technical Communications or related publications field and 1 year of related experience; or in lieu of degree, High School Diploma or equivalent and 5 years of related experience.

  • Must be able to demonstrate intermediate proficiency using Microsoft Word and Adobe Acrobat Pro.

  • Must have proficiency with standard document formatting/editing/production software, including electronic comment incorporation, importing graphic files, formatting tables, and applying templates.

  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, including spelling, grammar, punctuation, and proper use of syntax.

  • Must have knowledge of grammatical rules, spelling, composition, and style.

  • Must have excellent clerical proofreading skills.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Capable of functioning professionally, effectively, and efficiently in a fast-paced production environment.

  • Flexibility to respond to urgent project requests and/or changing priorities.

  • Ability to work overtime on short notice, as needed.

  • Experience performing online and traditional editing/proofreading tasks using appropriate editing/proofreading methods.

  • Skilled at drafting simple to complex documents (including maps, tables, photographs, and figures) to produce a logical format and structure and to resolve inconsistencies.

  • Ability to perform substantive edits, write original text, and work with technical authors to rewrite text.

  • Ability to review, format, and edit content to professional standards while conforming to appropriate style guide and other document-related guides and procedures.

  • Ability to identify and apply appropriate level of edit based on considerations such as customer expectation, audience, visibility, and project/corporate standards.

  • Competence in handling complex publication assignments with minimal supervision.

  • Ability to act as a lead writer/editor for large, multifunctional document assignments.

  • Experience interfacing with authors, subject matter experts, publications staff, and document control staff while preparing and coordinating a full range of technical documentation and other publication products.
